A review of seroprevalence and associated risk factors of human leptospirosis in Vietnam: Implications for public health research and interventions
Author: Tran Van Dinh, Le Thi Phuong Mai, Nguyen Thi Thu and Hoang Thi Thu Ha
Summary:
A systematic review was conducted with the aim to examine the seroprevalences, and its associated risk factors of Leptospira IgG and IgM among human in Vietnam. The databases of Medline, PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science, and several Vietnamese journals were used to search for relevant articles. Hand searching was also taken in libraries in universities in Hanoi. Totally, 12 studies with full text were selected for this review. Eight were population-based cross sectional study, three were hospital-based prospective study, and one study was conducted in both patients in hospital and in healthy population. The review shows that the seroprevalence of Leptospira IgG ranges from 7.8% to 82.3% and, the IgM ranges from 2.0% to 40.0%, depending on study design and selection criteria of participants. Bataviae, Panama, Icterohaemorrhagiae are the most popular serogroups in Vietnam. The associated risk factors of human Leptospira in Vietnam include not wearing personal protective equipment while working and/or contacting with soil, doing farming, animal raising, and slaughtering. Findings of this paper provide important implications for public health research, and Leptospira prevention in Vietnam. Well-designed and high hierarchy studies, such as case-control study, need to be further conducted to examine the risk factors of Leptospira infection among Vietnamese population, especially among unknown fever patients in the hospitals. This is the key requirement for successful leptospirosis intervention programs in the country
