Author: Nguyen Thi Thu Ha, Nguyen Quang Vinh, Phan Thi Thanh Thao and Pham Van Hau
This study aimed to determine the factors associated with acute diarrhea in children under five years old in the remote communes of Gia Lai Province, Vietnam. A study involving the longitudinal assessment of a cohort of children under five years old was carried out from July 2010 to September 2010 in 10 communes within Gia Lai Province, as follows: Dak Smar, Lơ Pang, Hnol, Ia Krăi, Ia Nan, Đak Pơ Pho, Đăk Kơ Ninh, Ia Piơr, Ia Rmook, and Ia Dreh. Cluster sampling was used to select 400 children and their mothers. Results showed that several socio-demographic factors, such as age, education level, and economic status of the mothers were associated with acute diarrhea in children under five years old. Moreover, the adjusted proportion probability suggests that the probability of children with low-educated mothers getting acute diarrhea would increase by 6.8%, that of children living in poor households would increase by 6.2%, and that of children whose households use stream water would increase by 14.3%. Therefore, community health education programs should focus on improving the mothers’ knowledge on diarrhea prevention and hygiene practices, such as boiling water before drinking
